It is located on the isle's west coast and is its largest commercial center and principal port. The island's economy is based exclusively on tourism.Ĭruz Bay (nicknamed Love City) is St John Island's cruise port and largest town (population around 3,000). Since 1956, around 60% of the island is a protected area ("Virgin Islands National Park") administered by the US National Park Service. The island has total area 51 km2 (19,6 mi2) and population around 4,500. The isle is located approx 6,5 km (4 mi) southwest of Tortola Island (BVI). If you like to play it safe and are directionally challenged, you’re better off doing the cruise line shore excursion. If you are comfortable with going out on your own, I would highly suggest heading over to Trunk Bay. If your ship leaves at 4:30 p.m., be on the 2 p.m. When returning to the ship, give yourself two hours of wiggle room before the ship has to leave.John, you will have the beach for a good two hours before the passengers taking cruise ship excursions show up. When the cruise ship guests arrive at the beach it gets very crowded. You have much more flexibility taking the ferry from Red Hook. There is a ferry from Charlotte Amalie (where the cruise ship docks) to Cruz Bay, but it takes 45 minutes and only runs three times per day.Additional ships could mean it takes longer for you to get where you’re going (not to mention bigger crowds once you arrive). We were lucky and there was only one cruise ship in port during our visit. If there are a lot of ships in port, give yourself extra time. If you want to be first off the ferry, take a seat toward the back end. This will ensure you a seat on the next ferry, not to mention a great seat if you want to sit up top. Consider arriving at the ferry terminal 20-30 minutes prior to departure.Even though many spots on the island take credit cards (with the exception of taxis), you never know when you may experience the dreaded “Cash Only” sign. It does get hot up there (especially on the return) so make sure you bring plenty of sunscreen. John, grab a seat on the upper deck of the ferry. If you’re looking to take some great photos of both St.Tips: An overlook of the beach at Trunk Bay. It’s best to bring your own bottled water for drinking. The potable water on the island, though purified, is trucked in from other places and stored in big tanks. I’d suggest not drinking the water from the water fountains or from the sinks. There are public restrooms and showers, along with a rental hut where you can rent beach chairs and snorkel gear. While much of the greenery which provided shade was destroyed during the particularly-destructive 2017 hurricane season, the beach’s natural beauty remains. Around 11 a.m., people who booked excursions through the ship - which tend to get a later start and move slower than you are able to on your own - will finally hit the beach, and it can get pretty crowded. The earlier you can get to the beach, the better. Snorkeling in Trunk Bay offers great photo opportunities.
